I posted a link on my Facebook page recently about the benefits of turmeric as there are so many reasons why and how it is capable of healing. I use it a lot in my cooking for that reason, but also to spice (or colour) certain things up in the absence of nightshades. You need to be a little cautious with how much turmeric you use, though. Too much and it’s earthy flavour gives out a bitter, peppery aftertaste which the children, especially, don’t like at all.
As with all herbs and spices, it’s important to source a good quality one and it really should be organic and, of course, gluten free. I love this brand because their products are sustainably sourced, GMO free and non-irradiated, which means they haven’t been treated with irradiation or chemicals in any way. Also buy them in reasonably small quantities unless you use them super quickly, in order to maintain their freshness and healing properties.
We love shakes and smoothies in our house and I always see them as yet another perfect way to get some essential collagen into our tummies. And this one is also a crafty way to sneak in a bit of turmeric without being found out! Here’s one we’ve been enjoying recently, which I think you’re going to love.
raspberry turmeric collagen shake
You could happily use fresh raspberries and a frozen banana if you prefer, but you may need to adjust the liquid content slightly)
(makes 2 large or 4 small)
1 cup (120g) frozen raspberries
1 large banana, peeled and roughly chopped
1 cup (250ml) coconut milk
1/2 cup (125ml) filtered water
1/2 tsp ground turmeric
2 tbsp collagen hydrolysate
1 tbsp lemon juice
Put all ingredients into a high speed blender and whizz until completely smooth, adding a dribble or two of filtered water if you find it too thick. Serve immediately, or watch the colour turn from raspberry to turmeric in front of very eyes!
